Switching Niches On YouTube

It is easier to make a U-turn when heading toward the wrong destination than to switch from your current niche to another on YouTube.

Lately, I have been asked how one can switch from one niche to another without hurting one’s channel or whether one should create another channel for the new content type. I will guide you on how to do that without having much impact on your channel.

You may wonder why one will want to change their niche on YouTube. Well, if you are not a YouTuber, you won’t understand.

For the Right Reason

You may want to change from your current niche for many reasons. For example, if you started your channel by making videos on a particular niche that was trending when you started, you felt you could join the trend to go viral, and eventually, you discovered that the niche is different from what you are passionate about. That could be a reason to change your channel’s niche.

For example, there is a buzz in the fashion world, and you join by making videos on fashion trends, and it gets to a point where you realize creating content for the niche is taking its toll on you. Creating content on this niche takes a lot, whereas you can naturally create content on Yoga without much stress. At that point, you may want to consider switching to content on Yoga.

You can find yourself doing vlog content because others are doing it and later realize that you can make more money through ad revenue by creating content on productivity, which is something you are also good at.

You can find yourself in one of these situations or others that I won’t delve much into; you need to understand that you should prepare your mind for the worst. However, there are some steps you can take to reduce the impact it will have on your channel.

Impact of Switching Niches

When you switch to another niche, you will notice a drop in your viewership – this shouldn’t come as a surprise to you because if I suddenly change my channel’s content to cryptocurrency, most of you won’t bother to click to watch my videos when you see the thumbnails and title because that is not what you subscribed to, in the first place. When the algorithm sees that most of my subscribers are not clicking to watch my new videos on crypto, it will stop recommending my new videos to them and similar audiences, and that will drastically affect the views on my channel. It could take several months for the algorithm to figure out new audiences who are interested in the new content type I switched to.

So, you should keep in mind that when you switch niches, it could take months or more than a year for your channel to bounce back. It all depends on how frequently you upload videos and how intriguing your new content is.

Don’t Switch Quickly

Before you switch, one of the ways to reduce the impact of changing niches on your channel is to introduce your new content gradually, not necessarily switching suddenly. For example, if you upload eight videos in a month, you can dedicate two of the videos to the new niche, and as the month goes by, you can increase to 3, 4, and so on.

This strategy will enable you to test the waters gradually. While you may lose some views from your current audience, you will slowly gain a new audience for the new niche, and you will be surprised that some of your old audience might enjoy your new content and be convinced to stay active.

In the video below, find out how your favorite YouTubers handled switching niches and creating another channel for their new niche (One failed, and the other two succeeded).
